What inspired you to start AppInstitute? Tell us the story.
I had my eureka moment back in 2009 when I was the Vice President of a tech incubator in Sydney. One of the projects we were working on was for a web-based CMS (Content Management System) that would allow anyone to create and manage editorial websites, without having to code.
Around the same time, the smartphone revolution was setting in with the launch of the iPhone and the AppStore, and that’s when I thought, ‘wouldn’t this amazing if we could use a CMS to build mobile apps instead of websites?’
I left my job and spent the next year in Thailand working on concepts and refining the business model for the SME market before moving back to the UK to launch AppInstitute.

As an entrepreneur, what is the one key piece of advice that you would like to share with fellow entrepreneurs?
RTFM (Read the fine manual)! I’m a strong believer in reading the instructions, whether it’s a washing machine or a smartwatch. You’ll learn how to operate things effectively, learn what not to do and most importantly learn things you didn’t already know. This is even more so applicable when it comes to business. Even if you think you have an amazing business idea, there’ll be a hundred and one things you don’t know when you first start hustling.
