What inspired you to start KickstartCommerce.com and DNAdverts.com? Tell us the story.
Having a decade and a half of web development, software, and business marketing experiences, KickstartCommerce.com was initially started in 2013 as a search marketing company.
It was during the course of writing content to educate customers about SEO strategy, tactics, and techniques that I was naturally drawn to domain names.
Over time, I moved from a search marketing focus to a core focus on sharing insightful personal and professional experiences about proven domain name strategies in their entirety. Then in 2016, I launched DNAdverts.com – an educational website sharing real-life domain encounters to help personal and business brands understand best practices of using domain names when marketing and advertising.
When it comes to building a successful online business, what are the top 3 long-term SEO strategies that eCommerce store owners should implement?
- Establish External Ratings/Reviews – Be certain to set up and actively maintain profile pages on Google, Bing, Facebook, Amazon, Yelp, MerchantCircle.com, CitySearch.com, Manta, and Better Business Bureau to name a few.
- Execute Sound, Consistent Content Marketing – Produce for the sole purpose of teaching how to problem solve and not to sell. Establish a consistent voice, delivery, and track record for producing content that solves problems with and without your product, service, and solution.
- Be Social and Partner Friendly – When launching an online women’s boutique store, The Unique Closet, in 2010 my wife and I partnered with up and coming fashion bloggers. Bloggers choose merchandise from our store and wrote about or showcased merchandise according to their preference. This not only helped with social networking and search marketing reach, but each relationship helped to shape the image of our store’s products and accessories. Never be afraid to give of yourself or your store without expecting anything in return. This relational capital will eventually turn into search capital online.
Here's a cliche among digital marketers: Search engine optimization (SEO) isn't what it used to be. Here's a true statement you don't hear as often: Your SEO strategy for 2018 shouldn't focus on keywords. These days, most businesses understand the basic concepts of SEO and why it's important.
For first-time online store owners and new online retail businesses, what SEO tools do you suggest they can leverage from and master quickly?
When opening an online retail store or eCommerce business for the first time, I recommend becoming acclimated with and mastering the following tools:
- Google Analytics
- Google Search Console
- Moz Link Explorer
- Screaming Frog
These tools are intuitive and robust enough to help you identify the overall SEO health of your digital presence.
What are your top tips for choosing and using new domain extension for retail business?
I recommend choosing and using a domain that passes the radio test – a test of whether or not customers can remember your domain via a television or radio ad, and not misspell it after hearing it. I suggest filtering your new domain selection using the following 5 thoughts to ensure the domain passes the radio test with flying colors:
- Be mindful of similar words (i.e., Brake vs Break, See vs Sea, No vs Know)
- Avoid number and word collisions (i.e., for, four, and 4 or to, two, too, and 2)
- Avoid abbreviations, slang, and weird spellings (i.e., Carz instead of Cars, DaCandyStore instead of TheCandyStore)
- Avoid the use of hyphens
- Avoid using hacks (i.e., RemeptionChur.ch, RadioNe.ws)
By Aman Masjide Buying a domain name is a simple process, right? Just find the one that you like (and is available) and bam! Make the payment and it's yours. Well, it's not that simple actually.
How can one use a new domain extension for retail business in order to build a better brand? Do new domain extensions impact overall SEO rankings?
Building on the previous answer, I believe new domain extensions to be the key to unlocking a ginormous door of possibility today for the online experience of tomorrow, especially when considering eCommerce. New domain extensions certainly indicate a brand being forward-thinking as opposed to legacy domain extensions (i.e., .com, .net, .org, etc.).
For example, I own AustinSEO.Services and AustinSEOServices.com. I purchased AustinSEO.Services because of symmetry, having the same number of letters to the right and left of the dot while saving 3 keystrokes.
In addition, new domain extensions are bursting at the seam in signaling great relevance to customers and search engines on both sides of the dot. In fact, I encourage personal and business brands to read and ponder over Bill Hartzer’s most recent case study for greater evidence.
As an entrepreneur, what is the one key piece of advice that you would like to share with fellow entrepreneurs that are hustling to start their online business?
My advice to fellow entrepreneurs is to remain confident and steadfast in building a business you’re passionate about. Remember, building a business is a marathon and not a sprint.
Never be afraid to fail and stay the entrepreneurial course while being bold and courageous whilst embracing and exploring new thoughts and concepts.
Lastly, be sure to meaningfully engage in professional and personal relationships on a consistent basis. Your business will grow greatly because of this as will your emotional well-being too!
